Marietta to host several basketball camps and shootouts during summer of 2009

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Women's Basketball Coach Jill Meiring and her staff will be hosting two JV and Varsity Team Shootout camps as well as a Day Camp during the 2009 summer.
JV and Varsity Team Shootouts will be from June 20 and 27. The Day Camp, for first through sixth graders, will take place June 29-July 3.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) was once again honored by the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) women’s basketball coaches on Tuesday (March 17) morning when she was named a unanimous selection to the Academic All-OAC team for the 2008-09 season. The OAC faculty athletic representatives selected the award winners. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) was honored by the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) women’s basketball coaches on Wednesday (March 4) morning when she was named All-OAC honorable mention for the 2008-09 season. [All-OAC Award Winners (.pdf)]
Carraher, a four-year letterwinner and captain as a senior, led second-year Head Coach Jill Meiring’s team in scoring by averaging 12.9 points in 25 games. The wing, which played an OAC-high 37.8 minutes per game, also contributed an average of 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals this winter for the Pioneers, who finished 2-23, 0-18 in the OAC.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team closed its 2008-09 campaign Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon with 75-43 loss to visiting Baldwin-Wallace College at Ban Johnson Arena. Before the game, Pioneer seniors Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) and Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) were honored during Senior Day.
Driscoll led the Pioneers (2-23, 0-18 OAC) with 10 points and two assists, while Carraher, who finished with nine points, capped her career with a school record 162 three-point field goals. Freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) also scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The fast paced offense of the visiting John Carroll University Blue Streaks proved to be too much for the Marietta College women's basketball team, as it fell 89-62 on Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 2-21 overall and 0-16 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). John Carroll improved to 13-10 overall and 8-8 in the OAC.
Senior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) drained a three-pointer at the 15:38 mark of the first half to give the Lady Pioneers a slim lead, 9-8. The Blue Streaks responded by going on a 14-0 run over the next four and one-half minutes to lead, 22-9, with 11:15 to play until intermission.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College is partnering with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to host a pair of Pink Zone basketball game during its final two home dates of the 2009 season. In an effort to increase breast cancer awareness, the Pioneers are working to raise money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Breast Cancer Fund.
The Pink Zone games will take place against John Carroll University on Feb. 14 and Baldwin-Wallace College on Feb. 21. Both games will tip-off inside Ban Johnson Arena at 3 p.m.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Cold shooting and turnovers plagued the Marietta College women’s basketball team in a 60-22 loss to visiting Capital University on Wednesday (Feb. 4) night at Ban Johnson Arena.
The Pioneers (2-18, 0-13 OAC) converted just 10-of-49 (.204) field goal attempts, committed 21 turnovers and scored a season-low 22 points against the first place Crusaders (14-4, 11-2 OAC). MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's and women's basketball teams will be joining forces with the American Cancer Society when they participate in a series of Coaches vs. Cancer programs during the first week of February.
The Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend, a collaborative initiative of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the American Cancer Society, is slated for Jan. 30-Feb. 1. Participating NABC-member college men’s basketball coaches, including Coach Jon VanderWal and his staff, will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their usual game attire during Saturday’s (Jan. 31) game against Wilmington College to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team overcame an 18-point second half deficit only to fall, 72-63, in overtime to the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena.
Senior Amanda Carraher’s (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) layup tied the score, 59-59, with 26 seconds to play in regulation. Carraher was fouled on the play, but missed the go-ahead free throw that would have put the Pioneers on top by one. The Pioneers, however, managed to stop the Polar Bears on their next possession to send the game into overtime. The Polar Bears outscored the Pioneers 13-4 in the extra stanza to escape with the 72-63 victory.

BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team could not overcome a strong Baldwin-Wallace College performance as it fell 74-39 on the road Saturday (Jan.17) afternoon. The loss dropped Marietta’s record to 2-14 overall and 0-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Baldwin-Wallace improved to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in the OAC.
Marietta's only lead came after freshman wing Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) scored the opening bucket to give her squad a 2-0 lead. Baldwin-Wallace scored the next 12 points to take control of the game the rest of the way. The Yellow Jackets held a 35-17 advantage at intermission before cruising to the 35-point win.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team fell to the visiting Muskingum College Fighting Muskies, 78-55, on Thursday (Jan. 8) night at Ban Johnson Arena. The game was moved to Thursday due to a power outage on the Marietta College campus Wednesday (Jan. 7). The loss dropped Marietta’s record to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Muskingum improved its record to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.
Muskingum jumped out to an early 12-6 lead with 8:25 into the first half. Marietta captured the lead, 17-15, after senior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) hit a pair of free throws with 6:42 to play before halftime. Driscoll’s free throws were part of a 13-0 run by the Pioneers, giving them a 23-15 lead with four minutes left on the first half clock. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) scored a season-high 20 points, but the Marietta College women’s basketball team dropped an 81-55 road decision to host Capital University on Saturday (Jan. 3) evening. The Pioneers, who returned to action after a 14-day layoff, fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders improved to 7-2, 4-0 in the OAC.
Marietta, who never led, managed to stay within reach of Capital for the first eight minutes of the game. The Pioneers stayed within five points until a layup by Lindsey Watt gave the Crusaders a 16-9 advantage with 11:48 remaining in the half. MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) etched her name into another place in the Pioneers' record book during a 72-59 loss to visiting Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Wilmington College on Saturday (Dec. 13) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. The loss dropped Marietta's record to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. Wilmington improved to 6-1, 2-1 in league play.
Carraher, who was already the Pioneers' single-game and single-season three-point record holder, entered the game tied for first place on Marietta's all-time three-point field goals list. She broke the record midway through the first half when she hit her 130th career three, putting Marietta ahead 18-16 at the time. Carraher, who added another three-pointer later in the half, finished with a game-high 17 points. It was the third time in four games that she finished with 17 points.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team led early but could not hold onto the lead as it fell 79-65 to visiting Otterbein College on Wednesday (Dec. 10) night at Fenton Court. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Cardinals improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
The two teams battled in the early minutes, but the Pioneers maintained the lead for the first 13 minutes of the game. The Pioneers led by as many as four points early, but each of their baskets were answered by a bucket by the Cardinals. A Laura Roth three-pointer gave Otterbein the lead, 27-25, at the six minute mark of the first half. The Cardinals used the three to go on a 16-3 run to close out the half and take a 41-28 advantage into intermission. Otterbein stretched its lead to as many as 22 points in the second half before going on to win 79-65.

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball suffered a 75-40 defeat to host Ohio Northern University Saturday (Dec. 6) afternoon in its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener at the ONU Sports Center. The Polar Bears improved to 2-3, 1-0 in the OAC, while the Pioneers fell to 2-5, 0-1 in the OAC.
Marietta finished the afternoon 14-of-40 (.350) from the field. The Pioneers went 5-of-12 (.417) from behind the three-point line and 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line. Ohio Northern finished 27-of-60 (.450) from the floor. The Polar Bears shot 4-of-13 (.308) from beyond the arc and went 17-of-21 (.810) from the line. Ohio Northern out rebounded Marietta 36-25 and out scored the Pioneers 38-18 in the paint. College 79-60 in the consolation game of the College of Mount St. Joseph Tip-off Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon. The loss dropped the Pioneers’ record to 1-2, while the Scots improved to 1-2 on the year.
It was a tale of two halves in Saturday’s game. Marietta shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field in the first half to help it take an early lead. Maryville responded by shooting 67.7% (21-of-31) in the final period to help it overcome the early deficit and cruise to a 19-point victory.

Marietta won its season opener for the first time since defeating N.C. Wesleyan, 50-44, in 2004-05.The Pioneers’ win also avenged a 79-62 loss to the Tomcats (1-1) in the first round of the 2007 Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament and evened the all-time series at three wins apiece.

Pioneers will look to lay foundation for success this season

MARIETTA, Ohio — Second-year Head Coach Jill Meiring will look for continued improvement from her young team during the 2008-09 season, as the Pioneers look to secure a foundation for success on the hard court in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Meiring welcomed six veterans and eight new additions when Marietta opened preseason practice in mid October.
The Pioneers will be without guard Justine Pagenhardt, who graduated as one of Marietta’s top four scores of all-time. Senior guards Amanda Carraher and Nikki Driscoll, both starters last year, will be asked to pick up the scoring slack this season. Carraher, who averaged 12.4 points, set the single-game (8) and single-season (70) record for three-point field goals in 2007-08. Driscoll, who added 8.0 points per game, ran the offense and led the team with 95 assists.
