Pioneer women fall at Mount Union 82-41
Marietta closes out season with Senior Day on Saturday against Baldwin-Wallace

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team could not keep up with a high-scoring Mount Union College squad as it fell 82-41 on Wednesday (Feb. 18) night. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 2-22 overall and 0-17 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Mount Union improved to 15-8 overall and 10-7 in the OAC.
Senior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) led the Pioneers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Freshman post Lizz Wilson (Ashtabula/Edgewood) scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Fellow freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) added seven points and collected a game-high eight boards in the loss.
Tessa Pohovay paced Mount Union with 14 points. Katie Crider and Taylor Hartung both scored 10 points in the victory.
The Pioneers led early, 2-1, after a jumper from Wilson. Another jumper by Wilson four minutes later tied the game at six with 14:26 to play in the half. The Purple Raiders went on a 15-2 run over the next six minutes to lead 19-8 with 8:37 left in the period. The Raiders used that run to build a 38-16 lead at intermission. Mount Union stretched its lead to as many as 43 points in the second stanza and cruised to a 82-41 victory.
Marietta finished 15-of-53 (.283) from the field, 4-of-20 (.200) from behind the arc and 7-of-9 (.778) from the free throw line. Mount Union went 29-of-63 (.460) from the field, 7-of-19 (.368) from three-point range and 17-of-22 (.773) from the free throw line. Marietta out-rebounded Mount Union, 41-36, but lost the turnover battle by committing 25 to Mount Union's seven.
The Pioneers will honor Carraher and fellow senior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) when they play their final game on Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon against Baldwin-Wallace College. Tip-off at Ban Johnson Arena is scheduled for 3 p.m. |
