Marietta drops 68-45 decision to host Wilmington
Drake contributes 14 points and eight boards in the loss

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team suffered its 15th straight setback, falling at Wilmington, 68-45, on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon. The loss dropped Marietta's record to 2-17 overall and 0-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Wilmington improved to 14-5 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.
Freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) led the Pioneers with 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/ Hilliard Davidson) followed with 10 points. Freshmen Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman) and Lizz Wilson (Ashtabula/Edgewood) both added eight points in the loss.
Claire Brown scored 19 points to go along with seven rebounds to lead the Quakers. Kortney Kin added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Olivia Waters collected a game-high 13 boards in the win.
Marietta hung around with Wilmington for the first part of the game. Carraher connected on two from the line to pull the Pioneers within five points, 13-8, with 13:17 to play in the opening period. Wilmington outscored Marietta 24-9 over the next ten minutes to build its lead to 18 points, 37-19. The Quakers then took a 40-27 advantage into intermission.
Wilmington's lead remained double-digits the entire second half and stretched to 27 points as the teams played the final 2:30. Time eventually ran out with the Quakers securing the 68-45 win.
Marietta shot 18-of-55 (.327) from the field, 3-of-10 (.300) from three-point range and 6-of-11 (.545) from the free throw line. Wilmington finished 27-of-64 (.422) from the field, 6-of-23 (.261) from behind the arc and 8-of-15 (.533) from the free throw line. The Quakers dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Pioneers 51-28 in the win.
The Pioneers will play host to Capital University on Wednesday (Feb. 4) night at Ban Johnson Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. |
