Marietta women fall to visiting Mount Union 86-70
Pioneers visit Baldwin-Wallace on Saturday

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team battled for 40 minutes but could not low down visiting Mount Union College as the Pioneers fell, 86-70, on Wednesday (Jan. 14) night at Ban Johnson Arena. The loss dropped Marietta’s record to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Purple Raiders improved to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the OAC.
The senior guard tandem of Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) and Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson), fresh off 18-point efforts against John Carroll, both scored 19 points in the game. Carraher also grabbed game-high 11 rebounds and dished out six assists. Driscoll, meanwhile, led all players with seven assists. Freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) added 11 points with four rebounds, while freshman wing Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman) chipped in with 10 points and eight boards.
Tessa Pohovey led the Purple Raiders with 19 points and five rebounds. Katie Crider was the only other Mount Union player to score in double figures. She finished with 11. Crider also dished out six assists. 14 different Purple Raiders scored in the victory.
The Pioneers only lead came early in the first half when a Driscoll three-pointer put Marietta up 3-0 with 18:21 to play in the period. Carraher used her first three-pointer of the night to give Marietta a 6-3 lead after the Purple Raiders tied the score at 3-3. Mount Union then took the lead for good, 9-6, with 17 minutes to play in the half after a three-pointer by Crider. The Purple Raiders stretched their lead to 10 points, 24-14, with 10:04 to play before intermission. Marietta cut the lead to one point, 27-26, before Mount Union regained momentum and took a 44-34 lead into halftime.
Mount Union took complete control of the game with a 10-2 run to start the second half. The Purple Raiders led by as many as 26 points before going on to capture the 86-70 road victory.
The Pioneers finished the game by shooting 28-of-77 (.364) from the field, 7-of-27 (.259) from behind the arc and 7-of-14 (.500) from the free throw line. Mount Union shot 29-of-59 (.492) from the field, 9-of-20 (.450) from three-point range and 19-of-30 (.633) from the charity stripe. Mount Union out-rebounded the Pioneers, 45-43, and both teams committed 18 turnovers.
Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 17) at Baldwin-Wallace College. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. The game will be televised on tape delay by SportsTime Ohio. It will air on Saturday at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and then again on Sunday at 2 p.m. |
