Lady Pioneers fall to Cardinals 79-65
Carraher ties school's all-time record for three-pointers in loss

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team led early but could not hold onto the lead as it fell 79-65 to visiting Otterbein College on Wednesday (Dec. 10) night at Fenton Court. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Cardinals improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.

The two teams battled in the early minutes, but the Pioneers maintained the lead for the first 13 minutes of the game. The Pioneers led by as many as four points early, but each of their baskets were answered by a bucket by the Cardinals. A Laura Roth three-pointer gave Otterbein the lead, 27-25, at the six minute mark of the first half. The Cardinals used the three to go on a 16-3 run to close out the half and take a 41-28 advantage into intermission. Otterbein stretched its lead to as many as 22 points in the second half before going on to win 79-65.

Senior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) led the Pioneers with 19 points on the night. Fellow senior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) recorded her first career double-double, scoring 11 points and collecting a career-high 10 rebounds, to go along with five assists and five steals. Carraher, the Pioneers' single-game and single-season three-point record holder also tied the career three-point mark of 129 in the game. Freshman post Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) added 11 points and six rebounds in the loss.

Roth led the Cardinals with 28 points while dishing out 10 assists. Karli Volkmer scored 22 points and had six assists. In addition, Katy Miller added 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.

Marietta finished 25-of-65 (.385) from the field, 6-of-25 (.240) from behind the arc and 9-of-12 (.750) from the free throw line. Otterbein shot 34-of-73 (.466) from the field, 5-of-13 (.385) from three-point range and 6-of-8 (.750) from the free throw line. The Cardinals held the edge in rebounding, 44-36, and committed 16 turnovers to Marietta’s 19.

Marietta will be back in action Saturday (Dec. 13) afternoon as it play host to the Wilmington College Quakers. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
