Marietta's Carraher scores 17 points in 74-63 loss at Denison
Pioneers open OAC play Saturday at Ohio Northern

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball dropped a 74-63 decision to host Denison University on Wednesday (Dec. 3) night. Pioneers' Head coach Jill Meiring, a 2001 graduate of Denison, and her squad fell to 2-3, while the Big Red improved to 2-2.

Senior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) scored 12 points and added six boards. Freshman post Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) contributed 11 points in the loss.

Caitlin Graessle led the Big Red with 13 points and five rebounds. Ellen O'Brien, Shaina Kaiser and Carolyn Simpson all scored 12 points. Simpson grabbed seven rebounds and Kaiser added six in the win.

The Pioneers led by five points, 12-7, with 13:32 left in the first half. Denison went on a 28-8 run over the next nine minutes to lead 35-20 with 4:07 left in the frame. Marietta responded and cut the lead to eight points, 37-29, at the half. Marietta retook the lead, 47-46, at the 11:58 mark of the second half after a pair of free throws by Beckett. The Pioneers led 53-49 with 9:06 left before Denison would make its run. The Big Red out scored Marietta 25-10 over the last nine minutes to finish off the Pioneers, 74-63. 

Marietta finished 24-of-52 (.462) from the field, 3-of-6 (.500) from behind the arc and 12-of-19 (.632) from the free throw line. Denison finished 26-of-62 (.419) from the field, 5-of-18 (.278) from three-point range and 17-of-27 (.630) from the free throw line. Denison won edge in rebounds, 37-36, and committed 17 turnovers compared to Marietta's 25.

The Pioneers begin Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on Saturday (Dec. 6) afternoon when they travel to Ada, Ohio, for a match-up with host Ohio Northern University at 3 p.m.
