Pioneer women fall 75-62 to host Lions in Mount St. Joseph Tournament opener
Three Marietta players score double figures in the loss

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2008-09 season, a 75-62 setback to the College of Mount St. Joseph, at the Lions’ tip-off tournament on Friday (Nov. 21) afternoon. The loss drops the Pioneers’ record to 1-1 and sends them to the consolation game, where they will take on Maryville (Tenn.) on Saturday (Nov. 22) at 1 p.m. The Lions improved to 1-0 on the season.

Senior wing Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) led Marietta with 15 points and two assists, while senior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) added eight points and nine assists. In addition, freshman post Chelsea Drake (Georgetown) contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, freshman wing Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) had 11 points and five rebounds, junior post Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) added six points and seven rebounds and freshman guard Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman) finished with eight points in the loss.

Mount St. Joseph was led by Kat O’Neill with 20 points, five rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Megan Smith added 11 points and six boards, Carolyn Holt finished with 10 points and seven rebounds and Lauren Schaller had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Marietta struggled out of the gate with Mount St. Joseph opening on a 12-0 run over the first seven minutes of the game. The Pioneers, however, battled back with a 19-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 19-18 advantage with seven minutes to play in the half. Marietta stretched its lead to eight points, 31-23, before Mount St. Joseph closed the half on another run of its own to tie the game at 31-31 at intermission.

The teams locked again at 40-40 four minutes into the second half, before the Lions regained control for good with a jumper at the 15:00 mark. Mount St. Joseph extended its lead to 13 points before the final horn sounded on a 75-62 victory.

Marietta once again struggled from the floor, shooting 21-of-59 (.356) overall, including 7-of-21 (.333) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers, who turned the ball over 12 times, added 13-of-19 (.684) from the free throw line. Mount St. Joseph finished 27-of-59 (.458) from the field, 4-of-11 (.363) from long range and 17-of-21 (.810) from the charity stripe. The Lions, who turned the ball over 17 times, out-rebounded the Pioneers 44-30.

Marietta will close out its action at the tournament with a match-up against Maryville in the consolation game after the Scots fell 74-72 to Olivet (Mich.) in the other first round game of the day. Tip-off between Marietta and Maryville is slated for 1 p.m. Live statistics will be available online.
