Marietta to host several soccer camps during summer of 2009

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Men's and Women's Soccer Coach Pat Holguin and his staff will host a Team High School Showcase camp as well as a Team Camp on campus this summer.

The Team High School Showcase will take place from July 17-19. The Team Camp is next on the calendar from July 21-24.

Adedapo named All-Region by National Soccer Coaches Association of America
Second men’s soccer play in school history to earn All-Region twice in career

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) announced its 2008 All-Region Men’s Soccer Teams this week and Marietta College junior defender Delé Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) received NCAA Division III All-Great Lakes Region first team honors.

Adedapo earned All-Region recognition for the second straight year; D3kicks.com named him All-Region third team in 2007. He is just the second person in school history to garner the honor twice, joining Ken Rickvalsky ‘84 who was named All-Region in both 1981 and 1982.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2008 Academic All-OAC Men’s Soccer Teams on Wednesday (Nov. 19) morning, and Marietta College senior defender Rob Vazquez (Euclid) earned Academic All-OAC honors, while senior defender/forward Kyle Blankenship (Galloway/Hilliard Darby) received Academic All-OAC honorable mention.

Vazquez, who also earned Academic All-OAC honors in 2007, helped anchor the Pioneers' defense for a fourth straight season in 2008. Marietta allowed just 1.59 goals per game and posted two shutouts this season. In the classroom, Vazquez maintains a 3.45 grade point average as a Petroleum Engineering major. The member of the Athletics Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List is also an active with Alpha Tau Omega, InterVarsity Club and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2008 All-OAC Men’s Soccer Teams and Special Award Winners on Wednesday (Nov. 12) morning, and Marietta College had four players earn All-OAC honors. In addition, 11th-year Head Coach Pat Holguin was named the OAC Coach of the Year.

Two juniors—defender Delè Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) and forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg)—earned All-OAC first team honors. In addition, senior midfielder Bradley Baweja (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) picked up All-OAC second team honors, while junior forward Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) received All-OAC honorable mention.

Marietta soccer ends OAC Tournament run with 3-0 loss to Ohio Northern in Championship
Pioneers finish historical year 11-7-3

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team had its season come to an end Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon following a 3-0 loss to host Ohio Northern University in the finals of the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament. With the win, the third-seeded Polar Bears (17-5-1) clinched their second OAC Tournament title and received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The fourth-seeded Pioneers finished the year 11-7-3.

Marietta led by 11th-year Head Coach Patrick Holguin, made its third OAC Tournament appearance in school history in 2008. The Pioneers also qualified in 1997 and 2007. Marietta has one OAC Soccer Championship; the program tied for the OAC regular season title in 1984.

With the victory, the fourth-seeded Pioneers improve to 10-6-3 and advance to the OAC Semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Capital University Wednesday (Nov. 5) at 2 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio. The fifth-seeded Student Princes end the year 7-11-2.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta Field with be the site of Monday (Nov. 3) afternoon's Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal match-up between rivals Heidelberg College and host Marietta College. The Pioneers enter as the fourth seed after finishing the regular season 9-6-3 overall and 4-4-1 in league play. The Student Princes are the fifth seed. They come in with a 7-10-2 record, having also finished 4-4-1 in the OAC.

Action begins at 2 p.m. Admission will be charged for Monday’s game and all OAC Tournament contests. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $2 for non-OAC students. Pioneers men's soccer closes out regular season with 3-0 loss to Ohio Northern

MARIETTA, Ohio — Entering the last regular season game Friday (Oct. 31) afternoon tied in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) standings, the Marietta College and Ohio Northern University men's soccer teams went head-to-head on Marietta Field to determine who would earn the third seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament. The Polar Bears secured the third seed and a home game in the first round of the tournament with a 3-0 win, spoiling Senior Day for the Pioneers.

The win, improved Ohio Northern's record to 14-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the OAC. Marietta fell to 9-6-3 overall and 4-4-1 in league play. Fortunately, the Pioneers will also get a home game in the OAC Quarterfinals, which take place Monday (Nov. 3) afternoon at 2 p.m. Marietta earned the fourth seed after regular season champion Capital Univeristy and Otterbein College battled to a 2-2 tie on Friday afternoon. John Carroll has already locked in the second seed but the final two spots are still up for grabs between Wilmington College, Heidelberg College and Muskingum College.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team secured a spot in the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament with a 2-1 victory over host Mount Union College Tuesday (Oct. 28) night at Mount Union Stadium.

The Pioneers, who improved to 9-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in league play, will finish no lower than sixth place in the standings, which guarantees them one of the six berths into the year-end tournament. It is the third time in school history and second straight season that Marietta will play in the OAC Tournament. The Purple Raiders fell to 6-11-1, 1-7 in the OAC.

BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team stumbled on the road Saturday (Oct. 25) night, falling 3-1 to host Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action. The win improved the Yellow Jackets' record to 12-5 overall and 2-5 in the OAC. The Pioneers fell to 8-5-3, 3-3-2 in league play.

Baldwin-Wallace out-shot Marietta 18-12 overall and both teams finished with seven shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) and senior defender Dan Cawley (Marietta) teamed up for two goals to lead Head Coach Pat Holguin's men's soccer team to a 3-1 Ohio Athletic Conference road victory over host Wilmington College on Wednesday (Oct. 22) night.

The win improved Marietta's record to 8-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the OAC. The Pioneers, who now sit alone in fourth place with 10 points and three games to play, kept pace with the top three schools in the Conference standings who also won on Wednesday. Pioneer men fall to host Capital 4-3 in double overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with host Capital University on Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon, but the Crusaders pulled out a 4-3, double overtime victory to remain in sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The win improved Capital's record to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. Marietta fell to 7-4-3, 2-2-1 in league play.

The Pioneers found themselves down 1-0 midway through the second minute when Steven McCarthy finished a loose ball in front of the box for the Capital goal. Junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) tied the game in the 19th minute with his seventh goal of the season. Junior midfielder Matt Sleyzak (Twinsburg) assisted the goal with a feed forward, leading to the breakaway goal.

Pioneers begin four game road trip Saturday at Capital

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team came away with a decisive, 3-1 victory Tuesday (Oct. 14) afternoon against visiting Muskingum College. The win improved Marietta's record to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Muskies fell to 3-9-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the OAC.

Marietta took a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute when the Pioneers scored a goal in transition. Senior midfielder Matt Sleyzak (Twinsburg) carried the ball from the backfield deep into Muskie territory. He then split a pair of defenders and passed the ball through them to junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg), who was racing toward the goal. Sleyzak’s pass drew out the Muskingum keeper, and Muth curled a shot around him, just inside the near post, for his sixth goal of the season.

Pioneers fall 3-2 to host John Carroll in men's soccer
Marietta drops to 1-1-1 in the OAC

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) match-up with host John Carroll University. The Blue Streaks, however, scored a late goal to reclaim the lead and held on for the 3-2 victory. The win, improved John Carroll's record to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC. The Pioneers fell to 6-3-3, 1-1-1 in league play.

Dave Hickey put John Carroll on top 1-0 with a goal in the 7th minute. The score, his first of the year, was set up by a corner kick from Louis Kastelic. The Blue Streaks extended their lead to 2-0 at the 8:12 mark when they scored after a second corner kick. Jake Milli finished off the play and scored his first goal of the season with assists from Jeff Kosek and Joe Ciacchi.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior midfielder Brad Baweja (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) scored his first goal of the season and junior forward Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) added his team-leading seventh of the year to propel host Marietta College to a 2-1 victory over visiting Otterbein College Wednesday on a rainy afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneers improved their record to 6-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

Marietta out-shot Otterbein 16-9, including 10-4 in shots on goal, but the outcome remained in doubt until the final horn sounded. The Pioneers dominated the first half of the game but still entered the locker room ahead by one goal. Both teams had their opportunities in the second half but each defense held strong and the game ended with Marietta holding on for the 2-1 win.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team opened its 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) season with a 1-1 tie after two overtimes against the visiting Heidelberg College Student Princes Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Marietta Field. Marietta, ranked ninth in the this week's NSCAA/Adidas Regional Rankings, moved to 5-2-3 overall and 0-0-1 in the OAC. Heidelberg improved to 3-6-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the OAC.

Both goals were scored within the first 12 minutes of the match. Marietta junior forward Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) finished a ball inside the six-yard box off a corner kick taken by senior Jack Dunn (Aurora/University) at the 9:22 mark. The goal was McDonald's sixth on the season, giving him sole possession of the team lead.

The Terriers, ranked sixth in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Regional Rankings, improved to 8-2, while the Pioneers, ranked ninth in the same poll, fell to 5-2-2.

Marietta took a 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute after senior forward Jack Dunn (Aurora/University) drew a foul in the box and junior defender Delè Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) converted the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Visiting Thomas More (Ky.) College scored two unanswered goals on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon to pull off the 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Marietta College at Marietta Field. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 5-1-2 and snapped a school-record tying seven game unbeaten streak. Marietta also went seven games without a loss in 1996 (4-0-3) and again in 2002 (7-0-0). The Saints improved to 7-1 on the year.

It was a tale of two halves for Marietta, who dominated the possession in the first half. The Pioneers out-shot the Saints 9-4 in the frame, but the game headed into intermission tied at 1-1.

MARIETTA, Ohio — On Monday (Sept. 22) afternoon, the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its weekly awards for the period of Sept. 15-20, and Marietta College senior forward Seita Kawamoto (Ebina, Kanagaua, Japan) earned Men’s Soccer Player of the Week honors.

Thanks in part to Kawamoto, the Pioneers improved to 5-0-2 and tied the school record for longest unbeaten streak. Marietta matched the feat set in 1996 when it went 4-0-3. The team also won seven straight in 2002.

MARIETTA, Ohio — After trailing by one goal late in Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon's non-conference match-up with visiting Saint Vincent (Pa.) College, the Marietta College men's soccer team rallied for two goals in a three-minute span to escape with the 3-2 victory at Marietta Field. The win improved Marietta's record to 5-0-2, while Saint Vincent fell to 3-4. The win also helped the Pioneers tie the school record for longest unbeaten streak, matching a feat accomplished in 1996 (4-0-3) and 2002 (7-0-0).

The Pioneers broke through in the first 23 seconds after junior Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) scored his fifth goal of the year. McDonald beat a defender down the left side and then the keeper with a shot inside the right post.

GAMBIER, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team continued its hot start to the 2008 season with a 2-1 victory over host Kenyon College Wednesday (Sept. 17) evening. The Lords, who sit sixth in the Sept. 16 National Soccer Coaches Association of America(NSCAA)/Adidas Great Lakes Regional Rankings, fell to 5-2-1 on the year. The Pioneers, who received votes in the same poll, improved their record to 4-0-2.

Marietta's victory pulled them within one game of tying the school record for longest unbeaten streak, which was set in 1996 when the Pioneers went 4-0-3 over a seven game stretch and matched in 2002 when they won seven straight.

ALTOONA, Pa. — Junior defender Delè Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) scored two goals to lead the Marietta College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over host Penn State-Altoona Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 3-0-2, while the Lions fell to 0-5-2.

Marietta took a 1-0 advantage early when Adedapo sent a long free kick toward the goal in the 17th minute. The ball bounced over the PSU-Altoona goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net to give Adedapo his first goal of the season.

Marietta defeats Westminster 2-0 to win consolation game at Soccer Classic
Muth scores two goals in victory

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s soccer team bounced back from last night’s overtime tie with Walsh University to defeat Westminster (Pa.) College 2-0 in Sunday (Sept. 7) morning’s Marietta College Classic consolation match. The win improved Marietta’s record 2-0-2, while Westminster fell to 3-2. 

Junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) scored both Pioneer goals on the day, one in each half. The first of Muth’s goals came when fellow junior Dan Cawley (Marietta) played a ball from the back that landed at Muth’s feet. Muth then calmly chipped the keeper from 15 yards out to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Muth struck again in the 76th minute, this time benefiting off a cross from freshman midfielder Mike Lomas (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood). Lomas beat three Titan defenders down the left sideline then found Muth just above the six-yard box.

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second straight outing, the Marietta College men's soccer team had to settle with 1-1 tie. The latest came on Saturday (Sept. 6) evening against Walsh University in the first round of the Marietta Soccer Classic at Marietta Field.

Senior Jack Dunn scores second goal of the season

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team had its first road test of the young season on Wednesday (Sept. 3) evening when the Pioneers took on regional, non-conference foe the College of Wooster at Carl Dale Memorial Field in Wooster. Marietta (1-0-1) and Wooster (0-2-1) battled for 110 minutes but neither team could break away, which resulted in a 1-1 tie. [Box Score]

The score remained locked at 0-0 when the teams took a break at halftime. Marietta notched the first lead of the night in the 74th minute. Freshman forward Dustin Zimmerman (Hebron/Granville Christian Academy) set up the goal with a thru ball, which was then crossed from the left side by senior defender Kyle Blankenship (Galloway/Hilliard Darby) to the feet of senior midfielder Seita Kawamoto (Ebina, Kanagaua, Japan). With one-touch, Kawamoto passed it to senior midfielder Jack Dunn (Aurora/University). Dunn then took a one-touch shot that found an opening inside the far post to give Marietta a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Dunn's second of the season; it was the first assist for both Kawamoto and Blankenship.

Marietta’s McDonald named OAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Junior collects five points in season-opening win over Malone

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its first edition of Players of the Week for the 2008-09 school year on Tuesday (Sept. 2) afternoon, and Marietta College junior forward Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) was named the Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.

McDonald, who transferred from West Virginia Wesleyan this fall, made the most of his debut with Marietta by scoring a pair of goals and assisting another in the Pioneers’ 5-0 victory over visiting Malone on Saturday (Aug. 30) at Marietta Field. The last time that Marietta won its season opener came six years ago when Head Coach Pat Holguin’s Pioneers defeated Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College 3-2 to open the 2003 Marietta Classic.

Head Coach Pat Holguin’s squad took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when junior Kyle Muth (Twinsburg), last year’s top goal scorer, took a thru ball from junior transfer Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg), beat the keeper and fired it into the back of the net from just outside the goal box.

Pioneers look to build off last year's OAC playoff appearance

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College men's soccer, under the direction of 11th-year Head Coach Patrick Holguin, looks to build off the momentum from last season’s run to the playoffs. The Pioneers finished 2007 with three straight OAC wins to clinch their first OAC playoff berth in ten years.

Marietta will be a veteran-led squad with seven seniors. Brad Baweja, Kyle Blankenship, Tad Cochran, Drew Craig, Jack Dunn, Steve Hagenau and Robert Vazquez return for their final season in blue and white.
